Botox and Dysport are sometimes described as lunch-break treatments, and they earn that label. Most patients are back to normal activity within minutes. That said, the first twenty-four hours after your appointment matter more than you might think. Following a few simple rules during that window helps the product settle exactly where it was placed, and helps you get the result your injector planned.
The Rules and Why They Exist
Most aftercare lists read like arbitrary fine print. Here is what actually matters and why.
Do Not Rub, Press, or Massage the Treated Areas
The most important rule. The product takes a few hours to bind to its target. Massaging the area can push it toward muscles you did not want treated, which is the most common cause of unwanted side effects like brow droop. Stay hands-off for at least four to six hours.
Do Not Lie Flat for Four Hours
Same logic. Lying down immediately after treatment can shift the product before it has bound to the target tissue. Upright or semi-upright is fine. A short nap propped up on pillows after several hours have passed is generally fine. A flat post-appointment nap is not.
Skip the Gym for the Rest of the Day
Vigorous exercise increases blood flow, can encourage product migration, and can also worsen bruising. Light walking is fine. Skip the heavy weights, hot yoga, and long runs until tomorrow.
Avoid Heat for the Rest of the Day
Saunas, hot tubs, very hot showers, and direct sun exposure all increase blood flow and the risk of bruising or product spread. Cool or warm is fine.
Skip Alcohol If You Can
Alcohol thins the blood and can worsen bruising at the injection sites. Skipping it for the first twelve to twenty-four hours is a small effort that pays off in fewer little marks.
Do Not Touch Up Your Face Aggressively
Light makeup is fine after a few hours if you must. Resist the urge to scrub, exfoliate, or apply pressure during the first day.
What Is Normal
Tiny red dots at each injection site that fade within a few hours. Mild puffiness or warmth at the points where the needle entered. The occasional small bruise, particularly around the eyes. A slight headache, which is reasonably common after first-time treatment of the forehead area.
What Is Not Normal
Significant asymmetry, drooping eyelid, or noticeable brow droop within the first three to seven days are not common but do happen occasionally. Contact your provider if you experience them. Most cases resolve as the product wears off, and your provider may have options to help manage symptoms in the meantime.
Significant swelling, difficulty breathing, hives, or any other allergic-style reaction is rare and should prompt immediate medical attention.
When You Will See Results
Softening typically begins between day three and day five. Full results are usually visible at day fourteen. We recommend new patients return for a two-week assessment so we can fine-tune dosing if any area needs a small adjustment.
