Masseter Botox: Jaw Slimming, TMJ Relief, and What to Expect

Masseter Botox is one of the most underrated neuromodulator treatments in aesthetic medicine. It can slim a heavy or square jawline, ease the muscle tension behind clenching and grinding, and reduce the chronic discomfort of TMJ dysfunction. It does all of this through one targeted treatment, with no surgery and no downtime.

What the Masseter Is

The masseter is the thick muscle that runs along the side of your jaw. You can feel it by clenching your teeth and pressing on the area just in front of your earlobe. It is one of the strongest muscles in the body for its size. In some patients it becomes enlarged from chronic clenching, grinding, or genetic predisposition.

How Masseter Botox Works

A controlled dose of Botox or Dysport is injected into the masseter muscle on each side. The product temporarily eases the muscle’s ability to fully contract. Over the following four to twelve weeks, the muscle gradually softens from reduced use, similar to how any muscle becomes smaller when it is used less.

When used aesthetically, the result is a slimmer, more tapered lower face. When used functionally, the result is a reduction in clenching force, which can substantially relieve TMJ discomfort and grinding-related headaches.

How Many Units It Takes

Dosing for the masseter is significantly higher than for facial expression areas. A typical range is twenty to fifty units of Botox per side, depending on muscle size and treatment goal. Dysport doses are scaled accordingly. Underdosing this muscle is one of the most common reasons patients feel that masseter Botox did not work for them.

How Long Until You See Results

Functional relief, like reduced clenching, often shows up within one to three weeks. The aesthetic change takes longer. Visible jaw slimming typically becomes noticeable at six to eight weeks and continues to refine over three to four months. Patients who continue treatment over two to three sessions usually see the most pronounced change.

How Long It Lasts

Masseter treatment tends to last longer than facial dosing because the muscle does less repetitive expression work. Most patients can stretch maintenance to every four to six months. Some patients eventually drop to twice a year once the muscle has substantially softened.

Who Is a Good Candidate

Patients who clench or grind, particularly at night, often benefit significantly. Patients with a heavy or square jawline who would prefer a softer contour are also good candidates. Patients with chronic jaw tension, morning soreness, or tension headaches that stem from the jaw should ask whether masseter Botox could be part of their plan.

It is not appropriate for everyone. Patients with very thin or sunken faces may not want to reduce masseter volume. A consultation is the only way to know.

What to Expect at Your Visit

The treatment itself takes about ten minutes. There is no downtime. You may feel mild tenderness in the muscle for a day or two. Eating normally is fine. We recommend avoiding aggressive chewing of very tough foods for the first day, but otherwise you can resume normal activity immediately.
