Microneedling with PRP vs. Exosomes: How to Choose

Microneedling on its own has a well-established role in improving skin texture and tone. Many practices pair it with an extra step to enhance the result, and the two most common partners are PRP and exosomes. Both are applied to the microchannels that microneedling creates, but they are quite different in what they are and where they come from.

The Common Foundation

In both cases, microneedling does the same thing first. A device creates a controlled pattern of tiny channels in the skin, which prompts the skin’s natural repair response and, importantly, lets actives absorb more effectively. The difference is what gets applied to those channels.

The PRP Option

PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, comes from your own blood. A small sample is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, which carry growth factors. That concentrated plasma is applied to the microchannels. The defining feature is that the material is entirely your own, with no manufactured serum involved. The trade-off is that it requires a blood draw.

The Exosome Option

The exosome option uses a professional serum instead of your blood. At SMooth Solutions Medspa that product is EXO-E, a plant-based complex applied in the office. There is no blood draw. The trade-off worth knowing is that topical exosome science is still developing, so it is best understood as a supportive enhancement rather than a proven stand-alone treatment.

How to Choose

A few practical questions help. Do you prefer to use your own biology and are comfortable with a blood draw? That leans toward PRP. Would you rather avoid a blood draw and are comfortable with a plant-based serum? That leans toward exosomes. Beyond preference, your provider’s read on your skin and goals matters, and in some cases either would be reasonable.

Neither is universally better, and you should be wary of anyone who insists otherwise. They are two routes to a similar idea, which is getting more out of microneedling by adding the right actives at the right moment.
